As a coda to this exchange, it may be worth noting that within M.H. 
Ferrell's "Norfolk and Western, Steam's Last Stand" (Hundman 
Publishing, 2007, available via N&WHS' Commissary) is a 
treasure-trove of Blue Ridge-area action, including photographers' 
shots from the two bridges, as on facing pages, pix of the long 
s-curve, west of Blue Ridge, and of the summit (gap) area, east of 
Blue Ridge, on pp. 96 and 97, respectively.
