I also subscribe to a railroadiana list and one topic over the last 3-4 years has been a huge discussion of fakes and attempts to report items to ebay. Ebay is in business to make money, they make money from sellers, not necessarily the buyers (short of paypal). Ebay does not care about fake railroad stuff, it is way to small a market. Now if someone is selling fake Rolex watches (which is common), Ebay will pay attention to that, because Rolex (and other companies have threatened to sue ebay for trademark infringement. There was a huge batch of back painted glass ticket signs a few years ago, and the story that always accompanied them was "found in an old station (depot) by my (insert relative here) when it was being torn down. The glass signs were for almost every road imaginable, including the N&W and VGN. The Virginian glass sign went for well over $200, but it simply is a fake. You can read about some of the fakes on this website http://www.railroadiana.org/fakes/pgFakes.php Accordingly, there is also been fakes surfacing of N&W heart shaped locks in recent years. The discussions on the railroadiana mailing list (which has been fairly quiet of late) were on the various reports of signs, and other fakes, how ebay did nothing about them, and the ongoing griping of why they won't listen. It is simple, ebay does not care about a niche group of collectors. Emailing a seller is questionable, over half the time my emails were dismissed with basically "don't bid if you don't like it" attitude or "I simply don't care" as long as it sells. The seller is generally in it to make some money, and telling him or her that those yellow bird plates (for example) are not truly N&W railroad items limits their saleability. In addition, once an auction is bid on, the seller cannot change the description. Upon occasion, sellers have been grateful for the information, but I've found that to be rare. One of the common mistakes (i.e. misidentified) items is the supposed "N&W" silverware which is actually "S&W" for the S&W cafeteria chain which once operated in Virginia and Tennessee. The way the letters are styled, it could appear to be an "N" not an "S", but close examination (and experience) will show you. I've seen these listed and sold for years. There have been a wide variety of N&W builder's plates listed over the past few years, most fakes, some going for outrageous amounts of money (for fakes) but even with reports to ebay went unanswered, or the response is "we cannot be experts, ebay is just facilitating the sale" Best Ken Miller On Sep 1, 2009, at 12:15 AM, NW Mailing List wrote: > Every auction has a report item button on it. The roads have been considering the matter for some time but have only recently agreed on a plan which will be put through as soon as the weather permits. The construction will be in charge of the Norfolk and Western. ------ New Freight Depot The money for the new freight depot has been allowed and work will be commenced as soon as the plans can be forwarded to this city and requisitions made for the necessary material. The new freight depot will have an entrance leading off Princeton avenue to the offices. The money for the improved roundhouse has also been allowed. The amount reached $36,000 while $15,000 will be put into the freight deport. The plan for the remodeling of the roundhouse calls for an addition all around the present building which will give a little more room in the house [Obviously for longer locomotives.] ------ Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This will start at noon with complimentary items on the grill for lunch and dinner, then continuing into the evening. Come and see the railway station at Boyce and chat about northern Virginia railfanning or N&W history. The ATCS monitoring hardware for a portion of the Hagerstown District will be on display in the "radio room." You can stay as short or as long as you wish. VENUE The former N&W station in Boyce, Virginia, is at milepost H46.1. It was built in 1913 with local private funding. An afternoon and evening picnic as well as presentations after dark will be outside. DIRECTIONS FROM THE NORTH, WEST, AND SOUTH: Visitors from Front Royal, Winchester, or Berryville will come to Boyce via US Highway 340. At the blinker light, please turn east and go 300 yards to the railroad crossing on East Main Street, county route 723. DIRECTIONS FROM THE EAST: If you are coming from the east, follow Interstate 66 to exit 23, which is US Highway 17 north at Delaplane. Proceed 7.5 miles on Highway 17 through the scenic Crooked Run valley to the intersection of US Highway 50 adjacent to Paris, Virginia. Make a left onto US Highway 50, John Mosby Highway, and make the climb and descent over Ashby Gap. After crossing the Shenandoah River and going about a mile, Clarke County Route 723 turns off on the right. The road is marked for Millwood and Boyce. It's about three miles to Millwood, then two more miles past that community to Boyce. Make a left into the parking lot adjacent to the NS Railway crossing. LODGING: The Best Western Lee-Jackson Motel is 15 minutes away and at Exit 312 along Interstate 312. That is the US Highway 50 East exit, with a plethora of other motels and eateries in sight. Most rooms range from $45 to $60 per night with some specials occasionally available. Reservations probably aren't needed if you check in prior to dark. In the event you want to camp out on a chilly --but not too cold-- September night, there are several options. If you have a camper, it can be parked behind the station and an extension cord can be provided for an electric hook-up. If you have a tent, it can be erected south of the station in a grassy area adjacent to the station platform. Finally, if you only have a sleeping bag and cushion, you may sleep on the a cluttered waiting room floor. For all, there is an inside one-stall toilet and sink accessible if I know you are staying over. PARKING: Once at the station, please park between East Main Street and the station building. I recommend that you leave your vehicle a little away from the track and not up against the north side of the station. This is just in case someone desires to take pictures of trains passing the station. PRESENTATIONS AND THEME: Please let me know if you will be attending and if you have material to present. The ATCS Hagerstown District will be periodically projected on the screen to track train movements. The video programs will begin at dusk outside, so pray for no rain. EQUIPMENT: A digital projector and laptop will be available. I also have a screen and a 35 mm slide projector. Just in case the bulb burns out, I ask that someone who has a known-to-be-operable slide projector bring their's along just in case. You won't need to get it out of your car unless there is a crisis. COMMUNICATIONS: Here are phone numbers of importance: Prior to Saturday, please call my weekday office phone at (202) 268-2121. The phone number at the station is (540) 837-9090, which you can provide to others as an emergency point of contact. Internet access is available for your laptop if you have a wireless card. For those without a laptop, there is a desktop computer available on a first-come, first-served basis. An outdoor electrical connection is available for people with laptops or other communications devices who want to recharge their batteries. The fax number at the station is (540) 837-9046. The fax machine is also available for sending messages, if needed. CHAIRS: Chairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Just in case there are more attendees than chairs or if you require special seating, please bring something suitable with you. FOOD: There will be complimentary hot dogs and burgers on a grill starting at both 1 PM and at 7 PM. If you'd like to bring your own or want to share side-dishes as pot-luck, please plan accordingly. A McDonalds and Sheetz Made-to-Order food stores are two miles away at the intersection of US Highways 50 and 304. A cooler with a sampling of free soft drinks will be iced. No "Rule G" infractions are allowed while on Norfolk Southern leased land. Smoking is okay outside the building. ACCESS: The toilet is not handicapped equipped but can be used with assistance. It is off the small waiting room which is about a 40-feet walk. It is not wide enough for wheelchair passage. QUESTIONS? ANYTHING I FORGOT? Please contact me off line at f_scheer at yahoo.com instead of replying on-list. I will provide you answers within 24 hours since I check email daily but not hourly. If it is useful information for others, I'll include the information in a follow-up posting. Hoping to see YOU, so you can see the RMSL! Joining us from Lithonia, GA were Mr. and Mrs. Doug Bess, frequent readers of these "Takin' Twenty" Reports. Doug brought his grandfather, VGN Conductor Joseph H. Jett's Conductors Log Book showing many Page to Deepwater trips. He also shared with us several photos of the early VGN and Deepwater trains and motive power from his family album that would make Saltwater want to swim back across the Atlantic to see. Doug is retired from NS and he and the Brethren became "old friends" immediately. Passed around were October "Trains" magazine and the July-Aug-Sept N&W HS "The Arrow". The "Trains" has a great article about the "Room with a view", the bed and breakfast beside NS Pokey tracks near Welch, WV, where you can step outside your bedroom and be just feet from about 30 trains a day. The Brethren especially enjoyed the cover to November "Trains" with heading "Why it's time U. S. Railroads go to electric powered locomotives". One of the Brethren asked "reckon they'll bring out the old VGN EL-C 135 from retirement"? "The Arrow" highlighted the Roanoke Convention with many VGN activities and "A Ride on the Powhatan Arrow". The ebay report this time includes the sale of VGN items: 1947 VGN Rwy Passenger Schedule for $33.00; 1955 New River Timetable for $62.99; and a VGN EL-2B Instruction Manual for $238.50. The DVDs included the moving and reassembly of the N&W Roanoke Shop build M2 4-8-0 #1151 from the old Virginia Scrap Iron near the VGN Station to VMT; the #1134 and #1118 moving to the Roanoke Chapter NRHS facility at 9th Street. Also one showed the ex-C&W Baldwin switchers #662 and #663 now in place at the 9th Street Yard. The highlight video was one I took Monday of the first groundbreaking for our new flag pole which will be dedicated in a special Ceremony on September 11 at the VGN Station at 11 AM. I read to the Brethren a paragraph from the Monday "Roanoke Times" stating that "100 years ago today" the ground is being broken for the building of the Station and Depot....not planned by me, coincidence, maybe Divine Providence? At the September 11 Ceremony, we will also announce the official "kick-off" of the restoration project. I also showed Felix Price, VGN electrician who worked at the Narrows Power Plant, the photo of Red Taylor and Toby Hodson in the special scaffold car working on the 11,000 volt line at Salem. Felix remembered Red Taylor and the car being used on the overhead lines for VGN electric locomotives. The Brethren will be honored at the September 11 flag pole ceremony and they all "perked up" when I told them that Landon Gregory was making a speech right after the Mayor of Roanoke's remarks. We also talked about the upcoming Roanoke Chapter NRHS Open House at the 9th Street Facility September 26, complete with rides on their two trains and displays of two of the "Lost Engines of Roanoke" and Chesapeake & Western diesel switchers. We also discussed the upcoming Gathering of VGN Brethren the first Saturday of October in Victoria. From a nearby table a gentleman asked if the Brethren knew Rural Wingo, VGN carpenter and car inspector. Ruf and Raymond East remembered Wingo and several friends of his including Fred McKinnon, VGN brakeman. Seems that Mr. Wingo was a carpenter for the MW gang and was only home on weekends. His son's friend once asked "Who is that man who comes to your house every weekend and tells you what to do?" William "Scotty" Scott, yard engineer, is not one for lack of words and frequently engages in conversation with anyone who will listen. Someone recently commented that "he must have been vaccinated with a phonograph needle". Time to pull the pin on this one! To begin with it was marked up twenty-five minutes late, but arrived in the station about ten minutes ahead of the marked up time. A quick shift was made and the train was ready to leave just before 12:55. Several passengers who had left the train for neighboring restaurants and other refreshing places did not arrive until the train was pulling out of the station. One of the men who was late caught the rear handle on the Pullman while another grabbed on and held, endangering his life. If it had not been for brakeman Lusk, who pulled him loose from his hold, throwing him to the pavement, and in that way saving him from falling underneath. The man had no sooner been pulled loose than a woman stepped off the front step of the Pullman, waving a letter and what appeared to be a pocket book, shouting that her husband was getting left. She jumped off in the usual woman's way, that is backwards, and for a wonder kept her footing. When she saw that she had jumped from a moving train she became excited and rushed back to get on, with everyone shouting and expecting to see her fall underneath the train. As soon as she got near the handle of the car the conductor, who had had his attention called to both ends of his car at the same time, grabbed her in his arms and literally lifted her on the car in spite of the fact that she weighed about 175 pounds. Meanwhile the brakeman who had jumped on the back of the train pulled the signal cord and the train stopped. As there were no other passengers in sight and as no one had been hurt, the train went on its way to Roanoke. Only one lesson can be drawn from the story and that is that Bluefield needs at the local station some gates to keep the American people from killing themselves whether they want to or not. ------ Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Following this statement it is now learned, unofficially, that the work on this division alone will amount to over $3,500,000 while the work on the Sciota division will reach $1,500,000. Two tunnels between Kimball and Welch will be built in addition to straightening the track at several points. Double track will be laid between West Vivian or Kimball and Huger, while a double track tunnel will be built in Kimball which will cut off from where the old station was located and pass through the hill at that point. This tunnel will pass very closely underneath the cemetery. At Big Four another tunnel will be built. The Dry Fork tunnel, which will be 4,700 feet long, will also be constructed. This will be a single track tunnel, and it is learned that there has been about $2,000,000 appropriated for work on the Dry Fork cut off which will eventually connect with the Clinch Valley division At Kimball the company will extend its yards west, putting in several tracks which are known as classification tracks. Near Wyoming the company will build double track from Wyoming to mile post 435 and from mile post 445 1/2 to 447. A number of sharp curves will be cut out and if the original plan is followed tunnels will be constructed at Panther, Mount's Curve and Delorme. The tunnels are to be 1,200, 1,800 and 1,500 feet respectively. The Kimball tunnel, outside of approaches, will be about 900 feet in length while the Big Four tunnel without the approaches will be about 600 feet in length. Twenty-one contracts have been figuring on the work and most of them were in this city yesterday morning and last night. They arrived at various times from the field and will leave here for Roanoke where they will submit their bids on the first of February when the contracts will either be let or turned down according to the bids which will be received. The work which is to be done will be of the greatest importance to the Norfolk and Western, as it will straighten out many places in the line which are in first class condition but which now cost the company a great deal of money on account of the curves which are a continual wear on equipment and which require a heavy outlay to maintain. The most noticeable of all the improvements which have been made up to date on the road are those near Roderfield, or the present station, Claren; at Welch, where a tunnel allows the road to save a long haul on a continual curve; and between Hallsville and Hemphill, where two tunnels cut off quite a distance. There are a number of other places which were greatly and materially improved by the six tunnels which were built in 1907 and their effect on the earnings of the road has been apparent, inasmuch as they primarily saved mileage and then the ordinary wear which every one connected with a railroad knows is continual on a road cut up with curves. When the original plans of the company are complete the Norfolk and Western will be perhaps the best coal carrying road in the country. I expect that would put the community at the east end of the 12.8- mile double track if Jim is west of Devon. N&W places the community at milepost N432.22 Wyoming was platted as a community with 61 lots and the first lot was sold on June 12, 1893. The community got a big boost in 1899 when W.G.W Iaeger sold 9,000 acres of timber rights in the vicinity to what became the Longpole Lumber Company. Longpole Lumber Co. built a lumber mill and manufacturing co. at Wyoming City. They also operated a 42-inch gauge lumber railroad up Fourpole and Longpole creeks. All of the proposed work in addition to many other improvements is being made without any great additional outlays and in face of an increased dividend. ------ [A 1910 operating timetable in the N&WHS Archives shows Wyoming to be about midway between Panther and Alnwick. The road will cross the Ohio and enter the city in the residential section, its station being located on Seventeenth street, where the company has already condemned property so that they may have terminal rights. How soon the work will be started is not known, but from the way in which the people whose property has been taken talk it will not be long. The line, which will be the main line, will extend from Elmore, two and one-half miles from Mullens, down the Guyandotte River for fifty miles, where it will connect with another road which has charter rights to build a line up the Guyandotte on the opposite side of the river from the Chesapeake and Ohio. It is for this company that the Huntington land has been purchased. The original plan, as told to a Daily Telegraph representative in 1907 by the president of the road, was to build the Virginian down the Guyandotte River from Elmore, a point which would have side tracks capable of holding 4,000 cars and which would be the lowest grade assembling point in the state. Here twelve branch lines will send coal which can be shipped east to Princeton and Sewell's Point and west to Huntington and the Ohio or some other point which will give the company connection with the Great Lakes to which point they have right of way bought and paid for. One of the objective points is the Island Creek and United States Coal and Oil properties. It is also reported on good authority that the Virginian has purchased the Paint Creek and Piney River Railroads, as it has been frequently reported by the Telegraph it would do. It is understood that the road, which runs from Beckley Junction to Prosperity, will be extended into Beckley and from Prosperity will run to the McKell [spelling?] property, down the Sand branch to connect with the Virginian at some point near the Crab Orchard Land and Improvement Company property. The Crab Orchard Land and Improvement Company claims to ship a large portion of the coal which goes over the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Virginian is going after that tonnage as well as that of other companies in the section. ------ [Either the reporter or I need a geography lesson. If the Virginian were to cross the Ohio River on the way to seventeenth street, it would be in Ohio instead of Huntington, WV.] Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
