J #604/611 Data

Lois, That guy was really pulling one over on you. That is without any doubt, the most preposterous lie ever told. Take it from a Norfolk Southern locomotive engineer, myself, who had the priviledge of not only operating 611, but working on her. For one thing, there are quite a few differences between 611 and 610, so someone would have had to go to extreme lengths to change 610, built in 1943, into 611, built in 1950. I wrote an an article on the differences between the J's, a couple of years ago. You can contact me offline at nwvgn at Hotmail.com, and I will send it to you. Briefly, there are two visual differences: 1) If you view photos of any of the 600-610 J's, you will notice that the hand-grab along the casing at the sandbox is located on the SIDE of the casing, whereas on 611-613, the hand grab is located on the TOP EDGE of the casing. Look closely, and you can see the difference. 2) The top deck of the tenders on 600-610 were sloped, while the tender decks of 611-613 were flat. Finally, 611 still has the dent on the boiler that we found when the casing was removed in Birmingham, and still shows the dents in the tender from her 1956 slide into the Tug river, of which your forthcoming book will detail. Like I said earlier, there are a few more differences, but seriously, 611 is the real thing. Thanks, Jim Flummer

I had the pleasure a few years ago of attending an environmental course with a member of the Norfolk Southern environmental department. I struck up a conversation with him and during the course of that conversation he said that the 611 was really the 610. Some time prior to or at the time of the decision to preserve a J-class, a high ranking Norfolk & Western executive ordered the number change. If my acquaintance gave a name of the executive I cannot recall it. Does anyone have more details about this or is this just an "urban legend" associated with 611?

I've always heard that the 611 was preserved because it was the last J remaining and O. Winston Link made a personal appeal to Stuart Saunders to save it. I'm sure the Link Museum can provide more definitive information.

First, I have a interesting question:
Why was 604 the first J to go to scrap?
Second, in my completion of the book Midnight on the Pocahontas (about 611's 1956 wreck) I have to cover why the 611 was preserved. I would like this to be a private conversation, but I would like to speak with former N&W employees and the like who have information on why the 611 is still with us today. The subject can also be discussed on the board at the moderator's wish.
