The demand for this grade of coal seems to be fairly brisk, and some agencies are having trouble in filling orders. In the Thacker field the labor question is a serious one and the operators do not seem to be able to get enough men to get out the coal they have orders for. The holidays around the Fourth of July did not help the situation any and labor is scarce, although some improvement is being noted now that the men are running out of money. The railroad people claim that the movement is ahead of last year and the showing for the month should be good although they admit it has been rather quiet since pay day on account of the holidays. The new engines are assisting the railroad materially in the movement of what coal is being moved and the expenses for the month should show a decided decrease. ------ Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This is the first consignment of this order and its arrival has been hailed with pleasure all along the line. For some time the Virginian has been laboring under the disadvantage of not having sufficient rolling stock to take care of the business. Now that the two thousand cars are being delivered, it is felt that pressure will be relieved to some extent. Cars also are coming from other orders and a number of new engines have been placed in commission. The two thousand cars will consist of fifteen hundred steel gondolas and five hundred steel hoppers. Eighty of them are on the road, bound for Deepwater, and each day will see from fifteen to twenty-five of them started on their active careers. The intro indicates that the Signal Corps film was shot at Camp Claiborne, LA, which is where the advanced detachment of the 755th Railway Shop Battalion (RSB), sponsored by the N&W, was activated in late 1942. (Arrow articles on the Military Railway Service [MRS] and the 755th appeared in 2003 and 2005.) About 20 seconds into the film in the background there appears to be a Transportation Corps' S-160 steamer, 2-8-0 (Alco/Baldwin/Lima), some 2,000 units of which were deployed to WWII MRS operations overseas. The MRS overseas received some 5,600 US-built locomotives during the course of the war, the largest class being the S-160s. A few S-160s served training and switching duties on US military installations in the US, but most went overseas; by war's end all were left in place with national rail administrations. I travel frequently to Italy, where some 250 S-160s were deployed during the war. I have seen several S-160s in rail museums in Naples and Turin. The Turin loco I saw in fact in November; it is unprotected from the weather, and restoration would be a major undertaking. The Naples steamer was restored in Verona, where I saw the boiler under rehab some decades ago. It is in the national rail museum at Portici, just outside Naples, and looks great. The S-160s when conveyed over to Italian hands became the national railway's Class 736 engines. Happily, rail "appassionati" all over the nation work weekends on restoration of remnant aging Italian locos. N&W's 755th RSB served in England, France and Belgium, where S-160s were very much under its care. Camp Claiborne was an MRS training center. The 725th Railway Operating Battalion, subject of the film, was sponsored by the Rock Island; following training it was deployed to India and Burma. The boy was on his way to Falls Mills, where his father was employed at the stone quarry of the Walton Company, when he met his death. The body was taken in charge by the section gang and as soon as his identity became known his father was notified of the accident and came home and conveyed the remains to his home. Interment will take place today in the colored cemetery in west Graham. ------ [It is surprising how many articles of that era in the Bluefield newspapers reported that people were killed by stepping out of the way of one train only to step in front of another on the double track. Also, to us today it is hard to imagine how common it was for a body to be taken directly to the deceased's home, but that was often done according to many of the newspaper articles of that time.] Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Gray, colored, of east Graham, was run over by a freight train west of Graham and his body terribly mangled under the wheels. The boy was on his way to Falls Mills, where his father was employed at the stone quarry of the Walton Company, when he met his death. It is presumed the lad had stepped from the westbound track to allow a westbound train to pass, only to step in front of an eastbound train. The body was taken in charge by the section gang and as soon as his identity became known his father was notified of the accident and came home and conveyed the remains to his home. Interment will take place today in the colored cemetery in west Graham. Well, not so surprising! Funeral Homes (as we know them now) are a relatively late invention. And I suppose there wasn't that much help and time available in emergency rooms just to pronounce somebody dead. Quite frequently, families prepared the body for burial, and sometimes even made the coffin themselves. I would think this was particularly common among poor colored families. Later on, funeral homes got legislation passed requiring embalming, and even where that was not the law, they made people think it was required, just to get the business. Jim Nichols ------ [It is surprising how many articles of that era in the Bluefield newspapers reported that people were killed by stepping out of the way of one train only to step in front of another on the double track. Also, to us today it is hard to imagine how common it was for a body to be taken directly to the deceased's home, but that was often done according to many of the newspaper articles of that time.] Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I had the pleasure of helping Santa assemble a dune buggy for my 14 year old grandson. I was asked by my oldest son if I could store the package, when Santa delivered it. I didn't know that he got it in China and it came in a tractor trailer in a 6' by 8' metal skid. We assembled it in two days. I shared with the Brethren some of the instructions listed on the "Hang tag for manual". "Please circumgyrate 180 degrees of rear turn lite"; "This vehicle is only using for amusement and lying fallow"; "The young man who is under the age of 18 can't operate this vehicle"; and my favorite "This marker can't remove before SALING". The full size dune buggy complete with a full roll cage and racing type seat belts had all fluids already applied except antifreeze. The battery acid had to be added to the battery. When we got it assembled, we of course had one box left over..a set of tools to put it together. I told the Brethren that Norfolk Southern invoked "FORCE MAJEURE" effective 12:01 AM 12/19/09 during our big snow that dumped several feet on NC, VA, WV, MD and eastern PA. This causes the line to be relieved of some contract and regulation requirements to handle an "Act of God" emergency. Landon Gregory said that he remembered using this as Chief Dispatcher, Virginia Division, Norfolk Southern, to clear up disasters and emergencies. This allows a crew to continue past the "hog law", for example,, to clear road crossings in an emergency, etc. Glen McLain, VGN Clerk, brings jokes to our session every week and we enjoy passing them around. You can tell who has them by the circulation of laughter. This week's favorite: A man took his wife to the doctor. After a short examination, the doctor said "Your wife's mind has completely gone!". To which the man replied "I'm not surprised, she's been giving a piece of it to me every day for the past 25 years". Time to pull the pin on this one! The lightweight Pullmans and diners were new in late 1949 and early 1950.? ???Jim Nichols? ? ??? -----Original Message----- From: nw-mailing-list-bounces at nwhs.org [mailto:nw-mailing-list-bounces at nwhs.org] On Behalf Of NW Mailing List Sent: Sunday, December 20, 2009 9:12 PM To: NW Mailing List Subject: Cavalier and Pochahantas cars can anyone tell me what types of cars were in the Cavalier and Pochahantas trains? did the Arrow end up getting any baggage cars or head end cars tony putnam ________________________________________ NW-Mailing-List at nwhs.org To change your subscription go to http://list.nwhs.org/mailman/options/nw-mailing-list Browse the NW-Mailing-List archives at http://list.nwhs.org/pipermail/nw-mailing-list/ ________________________________________ NW-Mailing-List at nwhs.org To change your subscription go to http://list.nwhs.org/mailman/options/nw-mailing-list Browse the NW-Mailing-List archives at http://list.nwhs.org/pipermail/nw-mailing-list/ ________________________________________ NW-Mailing-List at nwhs.org To change your subscription go to http://list.nwhs.org/mailman/options/nw-mailing-list Browse the NW-Mailing-List archives at http://list.nwhs.org/pipermail/nw-mailing-list/ ? -----Inline Attachment Follows----- ________________________________________ NW-Mailing-List at nwhs.org To change your subscription go to http://list.nwhs.org/mailman/options/nw-mailing-list Browse the NW-Mailing-List archives at http://list.nwhs.org/pipermail/nw-mailing-list/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The 10 section lounge on the Pocahontas had a solarium end, but frequently did not run on the end, since that end also had a diaphragm. The Arrow regularly ran with an observation, which made switching complicated when they wanted to add a coach. By this time, it was the only N&W train with an observation. The tavern-lounge-observation (flat end) on the Tennessean was run mid train by this time, and all the old open end cars had disappeared. Here the road will connect with the Piney River and Paint Creek Railroad, owned by Sam Dixon, but which it has been reported, Dixon has optioned to the Virginian. Sam Dixon is completing an extension of the White Oak Railroad which will extend for five or six miles to Bishop, where it will connect with the Piney River and Paint Creek Railroad, giving the Dixon mines double connection with the Virginian. This will be of additional benefit to the town of Beckley, as it will give it much better connections than it now has, enabling the people to easily reach the Virginian or the Chesapeake and Ohio. A road about eight or nine miles in length has been graded by the McKell interests from the McKell holdings on Upper Loop Creek through Pack's branch to connect with the Virginian at Paintsville. The grading of this stretch of road has been rushed and rails will be laid in a short time. This will give the McKell holdings additional railroad facilities. The Virginian also has a force of engineers at work revising the lines of its fifty mile branch down the Guyandotte river from Mullins [sic]. This revision will not materially change the route but will enable the road to get the best possible route through right-of-way it already owns. It was over this route that the Virginian originally expected to reach Point Pleasant but it [is] understood those plans are not yet matured. It is understood that the Virginian has recently been able to sell some bonds to cover the expense of the additional work which it is about to do and has decided that certain improvements must be made to properly develop its large property. The people of the town of Beckley are jubilant over the plans of the Virginian and those from that town who ** are the greatest local boosters a county ever had. The town of Beckley has sold its $40,000* bonds for the construction of paving and sewerage ** and it is understood the money will be paid over on the 18th of this month. Shortly afterward work will be commenced on the grading and paving so that Beckley may take its place among the up-to-date towns of West Virginia. The continually increasing coal output on the Virginian in that neighborhood and the bringing of Pemberton and the Winding Gulf to the very doors of Beckley bid fair to make the town a hustler and the people there are not slow to awaken to the fact. Beckley is even nearer to the coalfields in its section than Bluefield is. In fact, it has the mines of the Raleigh Coal and Coke Company within the town limits, while Bluefield is twelve miles from the nearest mines. ------ [** One word was too blurred on the microfilm to transcribe. *The amount was blurred on the microfilm, so the best interpretation is shown.] Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... C. Combs had a very narrow escape from death yesterday at Glen Alum when a flue burst in the engine on which he was fireman. The escaping steam burned him very badly about the face and arms. Engineer Marshall escaped unharmed. The accident occurred about 6:30 and Combs was brought to this city on train No. 2 which arrived here about noon. He was carried to the Bluefield Sanitarium where his burns were treated. [This is the second N&W boiler failure reported in as many days. Glen Alum, WV is on the main line between Devon and Wharnclife.] ------ New Railroad Chartered A new Railroad has been chartered to run from Lenore on Pigeon Creek, Tug Fork of Big Sandy, to the Mouth of Gilbert's Creek on the Guyandotte river. The capital stock is $50,000* and the incorporators are Simon P. Richmond, V. L. Black, L. G. Summerfield, Augus W. McDonald and George S. Couch, Jr., all of Charleston. The road will tap a large lumber, coal and oil territory. [*This number was blurred on the microfilm; the best interpretation is shown. I don't think this railroad was ever built.] ------ Money for Attachments Squire Godbey yesterday received $300 from the Norfolk and Western, which will be used to satisfy attachments which have been run on railroad employes during the past month. This money will be ready for distribution at once. Some of the money recovered represents debts many months old, to recover which suit has been entered in the magistrate's court. ------ Gordon Hamilton -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Two firemen were killed and two engineers were badly injured. That one was train 84 and Extra 1091 with a head end helper. I have no record on the fate of the crew on this one.
