Cabooses are still in use on some local trains. These trains must
make extended backing moves. The caboose provides a platform for the
brakeman or conductor to stand on to watch the crossings and signals
when the locomotive is pushing the train significant distances.
They are common in Roanoke as well as in the West Virginia coal fields.
Norfolk Southern just refinished a couple of the Roanoke cabooses.
They're hard to miss in their fresh bright red paint and white NS logo.
