Cow Killed by Train
A cow belonging to Mrs. Griggs, of the west end, strayed out on the railroad track yesterday morning in an effort to emulate some of the tramps who count ties, but bossie could not go the gait, even though she had four legs to the two usually owned by tramps. She inadvertently got in the way of a Clinch Valley passenger train and stopped there long enough to get killed and throw the engine from the tracks. The poor cow, which never meant any harm, mussed up the cow catcher considerably but the cow catcher failed to do its duty and instead of catching the cow it allowed her to immolate herself on the alter of progress. After the railroad engine got through with her cowship she was not even good for the ordinary uses to which the beef trust would put cows which were killed accidentally or otherwise.

Sorry,
I'm not sure what happened to my earlier post to cause the font to randomly
blow up many times larger than the rest of the text; it didn't look that way
on my editor before I hit "send". I was as surprised as you were by that.
FWIW, it looks fine as posted online in the mailing list archive.
Does anyone have any pointers on how to prevent that from happening?
My apologies if this one comes across wacky, too.

Well, no. The Powhatan Arrow stopped in Farmville (as did all other passenger trains). I know, because I used to ride it from Bluefield when going back to college at Hampden-Sydney. The only other possibility might have been troop trains, as they would have no need to stop at Farmville. However, it becomes a matter of traffic density, so they probably would have been routed through Farmville as well.

As for intermediate stops between Norfok and Roanoke, the Powhatan Arrow also stopped at Petersburg and Lynchburg.

There?s about a mile of thick, thick swamp separating the N&W line from the VGN and SAL lines in the vicinity of Algren; there?s absolutely no way to see the N&W from the VGN other along there.

I would be interested to know if there were any instances of N&W passenger trains bypassing Farmville on the belt line.? I believe, as you indicate, that passenger traffic was typically routed over the old ?HighBridge? line through Farmville, and the belt line, with its more favorable grades was used mainly for heavier tonnage.? Nevertheless, since the Powhatan Arrow did not make any intermediate stops between Norfolkand Roanoke, I would suppose routing it over the belt line around Farmville would not pose a problem for passengers.?
