INSPECT LOCAL YARDS

Louisville and Nashville Officials Here to See How Traffic is Handled
    W. P. Bruce, of Nashville, superintendent of terminals; W. J. Harlowe, of Birmingham, inspector of transportation, and C. H. Blackman, assistant engineer, of Louisville, spent Sunday and yesterday in the city on a tour of inspection of the local railroad yards with a view of learning points in connection with the local terminals which may be used to advantage in the construction of a new yard for the Louisville and Nashville near Cincinnati.  They were shown all over the yard and also had access to the maps showing the arrangement of the tracks so that they might get a definite idea of the local way of handling traffic over a gravity yard.  There are very few towns in the country which have as fine a gravity yard as this city has, on account of the natural location which was used to the greatest of advantage in the building and laying out of the tracks.  Cars from either the east or the west can be brought here and after they reach the hump in the yard they are switched to their respective tracks by gravity, it not being necessary to use the large number of shifting engines with the resulting congestion which occurs on other railroad yards.  The party left last night on train No. 3 and will visit other Norfolk and Western yards.
