"Can anyone identify the bulge on the right side of the cylinder block--between the valve and the cylinder on the M2 or M2c?"

I think you are speaking of the "By Pass Valves". These were used when drifting and are automatic in operation. they permit free circulation of air from one end of the cylinder to the other.
