MAY TAKE OVER OLD TWELVE POLE LINE
------
United States Coal and Coke Company Said to be After Branch Road of N. & W.
There is a steadily growing impression which has its origin in repeated rumors, and information emanating from semi-official sources, to the effect that the United States Coal and Oil [sic] Company, operating the great Holden mines and controlling much other valuable property in the vicinity of the Holden operations, will be the head of a syndicate which will take over the Twelve Pole Valley [sic] Line of the Norfolk and Western from Dingess to Kenova, in order to secure a direct outlet to the north, via the Kenova bridge.
In order to accomplish this purpose it would be necessary to construct a connecting link of railway between the mines on Island creek, Logan county and Dingess at the entrance of the great Dingess tunnel, in the head of Twelve Pole, in Mingo county. This connecting link would be but a few miles in length, and would be easy of construction, except that a tunnel of rather heavy proportions would be necessary in order to get under the divide between the Guyandotte and Twelve Pole rivers.
Since the construction of the Big Sandy line of the Norfolk and Western there has been little traffic on the old Twelve Pole branch between Kenova and Naugatuck, where the Big Sandy line begins and ends.
It is held that the Holden people want to secure control of, or at least the right to operate the old line, in order to get a direct outlet over the Norfolk and Western tracks to Columbus, Cleveland, Chicago and other cities of the northwest.
It has been hinted that this deal has something to do with the erection of the new Norfolk and Western bridge at Kenova.
