PASSENGER TRAIN IS WRECKED AT HEWLETT
------
Diner, Pullman and Lake Shore Private Car Overturned But No One Was Seriously Injured
Passenger train No. 15 was wrecked at Hewlett, 161 miles west of Bluefield, yesterday afternoon, about 1 o'clock, when a rail which had bucked up under the heat of the sun threw the dining car, Pullman and a New York Central private car from the track and up against an embankment. The trucks were torn from the diner, and the other cars, considerably damaged, were also left at the scene of the wreck, when the train resumed its journey.
G. W. Hotchkiss, vice president and general manager of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad, was in the private car on his way to Cincinnati. No one was injured seriously. The accident occurred on a level stretch of country and the train was making a rapid rate of speed when the bad rail was struck. The engine, mail car, baggage car and two day coaches passed over the rail, which buckled when the heavy dining car struck it. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Stafford, who were married here yesterday morning, were on the Pullman but neither was injured in any way.
The speed which the train was making dragged the cars for some little distance and tore up considerable track with the result that the derailed cars were not retracked for several hours. No. 16, which was due to pass the scene of the accident about three quarters of an hour later, was delayed for over five hours and did not reach this city until after 2 o'clock this morning.
