MAMMOTH COAL PIER
------
Norfolk Papers Continue to Tell of Norfolk and Western's Plans
The Norfolk newspapers continue to publish the story of the $3,000,000 coal pier which it is said will be erected by the Norfolk and Western. The Ledger-Dispatch says:
The Norfolk and Western Railway Company has in contemplation the construction at Lambert's Point, Norfolk, of what has been said likely shall be the world's greatest coal pier.
Tentative plans have been drawn after examination by the engineers of the best piers now extant with a view to improving upon those and inquiry as to the cost of building the pier is being made.
It has been said that this cost is likely to approximate $3,000,000 and that the pier may be built with double equipment so that should one side break down the other still may be operated. Of the correctness of this last, however, no assurance has been received.
Whether the new pier shall be built depends entirely upon whether the coal trade of this port shall continue to increase as it has been doing. There is everything to indicate that it will do so, as the coal operators here are earnestly striving to broaden their market, especially in foreign countries, and apparently they are making considerable headway.
