The Illinois Central tended to turn its passenger locomotive bells like this
one on both earlier and later production. However, I do not think this
pattern is correct for an IC bell.

It still may be possible to identify the railroad and or locomotive from
which it came but
need more information. Is there any numbers stamp on the bronze part of the
bell? If
this were a Baldwin Loco bell there will be stamped a series of numbers on
the very top of the bell (bronze part)
I mean the part under the counter wait (Ball on top) you would have to
remove it to see the number. Its called
the Baldwin Code and can identify it down to the particular locomotive. 872
is just a pattern number
but may be compared to other known bells in other collections . Don't
assume that its C&O or Sou.
just because it was found in Charlottesville Va. these things get around I
found an N&W bell in Salt Lake
City UT.last year. You can tell that this is a very early bell possibly
before 1900 due to all the rings and
turnings on the outside or the bell. You may want to try this site for
further help http://www.railroadiana.org/
I have sent your photos to several other collector who might be able to
help.

Would it be possible, Gordon, to find the locomotive that the bell came
from?

The number 872 cast on the stand is almost certainly the pattern number for
that piece. It would be the same for all locomotives that use that
particular stand.

I have recently found some items that I would like to obtain some additional
information and/or advice as to where I might seek more information. First
I have located a bell from an unknown locomotive. I have attached three
photographs of the bell, number 872 on outside top. As I live near
Charlottesville and know that the original owner probably obtained the bell
here, could I assume that this is from either a Southern or C & O
locomotive?
The other find are several original photographs of steam locomotives and
trains signed by William E. Warden. The photos that I have are Southern and
C & O. I have been able to do some research online and have found some
information about him, but I wonder if there is anyone on the list who knew
him and is familiar with his books and photos?
I would greatly appreciate any help or comments from the list.
