The answer is simple: You provide support to the NWHS when you buy from the NWHS. Part of your purchase price goes to keep the Archives running with electricity which powers lights, heating, air conditioning, dehunidifiers, scanners, computers, alarms, building upkeep, etc. It also helps pay the water bill, trash pick-up and other city services. It pays for the servers that keep these mailing lists operational.
The NWHS sells to retailers to increase the sales of our products, but we sell at the standard industry rate of 40% off retail. Large retailers can offer discounts because of volume sales. NWHS does not offer discounts other than member discount because our sales are relatively low volume.
NWHS publications are produced by volunteer labor (other than graphic artists) with the book authors receiving a small number of books at cost or a small stipend in lieu of books. Still the cost of producing a book can cost us up to $20,000 or more depending on number of pages, quality of paper, types of cover, quanity of books produced, shipping costs from printer, etc.
So when you buy directly from NWHS you are doing just a little bit more to keep the NWHS and its archives in existence.
I buy products from NWHS Commissary, not because they are the best price, but as a way of supporting the NWHS and keeping it operational. I may be a bit selfish in that regard because I use the archives a lot for research and I would like to see them keep running.

"Also, I note the "pre-pub" offering of Mason's new book; am I correct that members only save $2.00 between pre-pub and member's regular pricing? Since the Society hasn't produced an original publication since the Thieme book, this isn't much incentive to fork out $ now "
My thought on this is why pay more in the end for the pre-pub w/postage when you can get it for less at your favorite store?
