Anthracite burned at a much slower rate than bituminous. Therefore, grates had to be much larger so more of it could be burned at one time to get the equivalent release of BTUs.

Subject: Coal burners
What was the significant engineering difference in an "anthracite" coal burning locomotive, or any other coal burning locomotive?
Thanks;
Gene A.
