What would have caused the engine to give a "sudden jerk"? Could that have been an opinionated guess by the reporter?

  LOSES LEFT FOOT
  ------
John W. Brown, Brakeman, Injured While Cutting Loose Cars
John W. Brown, of this city, a brakeman on the Clinch Valley division, had his left foot cut off while attempting to cut loose some cars from his train at Swords Creek about 5:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He had started between the cars when the engine gave a sudden jerk. Brown was brought to Richlands where surgical attention was given him by Dr. Williams.
