Subject: Wreck/Steam Whistle Info Needed
Does anyone know anything about an N&W train wreck between Petersburg and Suffolk, probably in the Wakefield or Ivor area? Not recent, but don't know how long ago.
Also, how can you positively identify that a steam whistle came off an N&W engine?
Thanks - H.B. Bryant
There was a passenger train derailment at Ivor in the 1960's. It was never investigated by the ICC. An eastbound
passenger train had passed the main street crossing. The local fire department had received a call and they
proceeded to the crossing and waited for the passenger train to clear. Immediately after clearing, the fire
truck started north toward U.S. 460 although the grade crossing signals were still activated - - - by a westbond
freight. There was no collision between the fire truck and the freight, but seeing the red flashing lights, the engineer put the train into emergency and some of the cars buckled blocking the eastbound main track. The passenger
train collided with the buckled cars. Harry Bundy
