J. R. Saunders Officially Notified of His Appointment as Agent

J. R. Saunders has been officially notified of his promotion to the position of agent for the Norfolk and Western at Pocahontas, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of J. F. Ward. Mr. Saunders will go to Pocahontas and assume control of the position at once. It has not yet been decided who will succeed Mr. Saunders here, but several men are spoken of for the Graham agency, among them being George W. Pile, present agent at Elkhorn; J. J. Coze, of St. Paul; T. W. Zink, of Keystone; W. L. Baker, of Tazewell, and others. The people here regret exceedingly to give up Mr. Saunders, as their agent but are glad to see him receive his well merited advance. Pocahontas, owing to the large amount of express commission received, is perhaps the best paying agency on the Norfolk and Western road, and all agree that the right man has been given the appointment. Mr. Saunders has been in the employ of the Norfolk and Western road for thirty consecutive years. He started in as a warehouse man at Oakvale, which position he held for some years, until the Columbus extension was built as far west as Powhatan, when he was transferred to Elkhorn. He was succeeded at Oakvale by W. R. Hudson, now general manager of the Norfolk and Southern Railway. Mr. Saunders billed out the first car of coal that was mined west of Elkhorn tunnel, while agent at Elkhorn. His service in that capacity continued and he was later made agent at Bramwell, from which point he came to Graham, where he has since remained. The promotion of Mr. Saunders to Pocahontas agency is appreciated by telegraphers generally because of a general advancement all the way up the line that will follow by reason of the changes. While the people here regret to lose Mr. Saunders and his family, they find satisfaction in the fact that Pocahontas is not far away.
