Clinchfield Coal Corporation Also Finds Market for Other Coals It Was Forced to Buy
    The Clinchfield Coal Corporation, which sells its product through the Clinchfield Fuel Corporation, has sold its entire product for the year, according to reliable information, and is finding a good market for other coals which the concern has been forced to buy to meet the demand and to furnish additional traffic for the new railroad.
    There is a well founded belief in some coal circles that if the Interstate Railroad secures entrance into the union depot at Norton that line, which it has been frequently reported would extend into the coals of Kentucky and other Virginia counties, would be able to furnish considerable additional tonnage to the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio, via Norton and St. Paul, but many still cling to the old idea that the Interstate and the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio will sooner or later become the property of the Norfolk and Western, thus expending the territory of the Pennsylvania Railroad which could have an outlet to the extreme south by several routes, i.e., the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk and Norfolk and Western, the Norfolk and Western and South Bound [sic] Railway, and the newer road, the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio, which could give a route from southwest Virginia and Kentucky.
    If, however, it were not for the purchase of the Chicago division of the Chesapeake and Ohio by that line, many believe the Chesapeake and Ohio would try to swing the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio deal alone so as to get a southern outlet; that is, if the Norfolk and Western had not gotten a prior hold, such as the extreme friendships which exist between the lines would suggest.

[Interestingly, it wasn't the C&O that took over the CC&O to get a southern outlet, but the ACL (along with the L&N) at the southern end of the CC&O that eventually took over.]
