THE GRAHAM DAILY NEWS
------
UNDERGROUND CROSSING
------
Norfolk and Western engineers were yesterday locating the grades for the underground crossing that it is proposed to establish under the Clinch Valley railroad opposite the Mitchell ice plant. The presence of the engineering corps was taken to mean that the company had decided to put in the subway tunnel, and the favorable prospect of having the present surface crossing eliminated was received by the citizens with much satisfaction. The new macadam street and the street car tracks will be run under the railroad at this point, thus disposing of the argument that the location was a dangerous one for the trolley line to cross the railroad.* William Mitchell's property faces directly opposite where it is planned to tunnel under the railroad and necessarily he will have to be consulted as to the excavation work on the north side of the railroad.

*For months citizens had been campaigning for extension of the trolley line from Bluefield, WV, that terminated at Morton St. (present S. College Ave.) in Graham, to serve the west end section of Graham. Without an underpass the proposed trolley line would have to cross the Clinch Valley tracks at grade. The extension to west Graham did not occur until about 1920.
