:
I received this inquiry from a friend who works for NS in Atlanta:
> The old Virginian and the current NS mainline tracks in Chesapeake are
essentially parallel to each other and fairly close. Somewhere close to
Bower's Hill the Virginian tracks stop. Did they merge with the N&W for
awhile and share trackage rights?

It appears that your friend in Atlanta has today's NS confused with the
former SAL. Yes, the
Virginian and the SAL paralleled each other Bowers Hill to Kilby (west of
Suffolk) with a diamond
at Algren. The importance of Bridge 7 (Southern Branch) can't be over
emphasized and twenty years
ago (or so) there was a proposal to build a "just in case" route from
N&W's mainline in the Dismal
Swamp to the former VGN near Bowers Hill. The proposed connection would
have been about four
miles in length and it never came about. Can't say how the Amtrak
service to South Hampton
Roads will affect the former VGN. Plans seem to change daily. But one
proposal has Amtrak
diverting from the former N&W at South Norfolk to the former VGN for a run
to CSX at Algren (or
maybe Amtrak will rehabilitate the VGN route to Kilby). The station stop
for Portsmouth is planned
to be near the VGN's Sunray station. Hope this helps. Harry
Bundy.
