In an old 1930s WPA guide to Washington, the N&W is listed as one of seven railroads with passenger service to Union Station in Washington. How was this done, over the SR from Lynchburg?

Not sure what the WPA used as a reference. A 1954 edition of The Official Guide shows
five roads serving Washington, D.C. - B&O, PRR, Southern, RF&P, and C&O. But even in
1930, there were at least 6 roads (maybe others) that offered through car service to D.C. -- NYNH&H, N&W, FEC, SAL, ACL, and even the wooden-axle NS provided through sleeping
car service from Pinehurst, NC and Virginia Beach to New York. And beginning in Oct., 1930,
PRR offered an airline connection - TAT at Port Columbus. Harry Bundy
