the very basics of any signal is protecting the track ahead.
A single head will give green yellow red, red-stop, yellow-proceed
alerting maybe stop at next signal, green-proceed.
Dual heads essentially tell the speed to run at, but usually help
indicate turnout positions.
The loqwest switch you would have 2 heads, determin which is the
-normal- route, the top head will indicate that route, the lower head
will indicate the diverging route.
Usually when the straight ahead is set, the top head will be green, the
lower red, and reversed when set the other way.
Complex junctions could have 3 heads.
Each turnout will have 3 signals protecting it.
You may have a more special arrangement that could reduce the number of
signals however, just depends how -into- you are in wiring and doing a
little more complicated setups.
Take your time, learn, their is more data searchable on the web.
