Re: The question of where the N&W got coal for its locomotives prior to the
opening of the Pocahontas Coal Field
The Jan. 6, 1877 edition of "The Engineering and Mining Journal" states
that coal from the Coalburg Mines was used by the Atlantic, Mississippi &
Ohio Railroad (predecessor to the N&W Ry.) as a locomotive fuel.
The Coalburg (or Coalburgh) mine was one of the early commercial mines in
the Kanawha Coal Field of West Virginia, being first opened in 1856.
Coalburg was located along the Kanawha River, about 18 upstream of
Charleston, WV.
Prior to the completion of the Chesapeake & Ohio Ry. in 1873, the Coalburg
mine shipped to market via the Kanawha River (to the Ohio River). Following
the arrival of the C&O, the mine shipped by rail but also continued to ship
via the Kanawha.
I've put up a page about the mine with additional information and links to
the sources of the info at: http://wvrailroads.net/index.php/Coalburgh_Mine
