Looking at Mr. King's excellent color photograph of the 124 in the latest issue of the Arrow raised a few questions in my mind...
1.) Where were the electrical controls for illuminating the lamps behind the number boards and the lamps in the classification lights? Were they not round rotary snap switches mounted between the forward and reverse headlight switches, over the engineman's window? And how about the location of the control for the lamps located below the cab on both sides, affording a little illumination for the steps on the front of the tender leading up to the cab?
2.) On the streamlined J's and K's, what was the means of access to change lamps in the number boards? Were the number board bezels removable (setscrews?,) or was access to the number board lamps gained by swinging the headlight open and finding some workman with VERY long arms?
3.) What type of insulation was used on the wiring to the headlight, number boards and classification lamps? That wiring was within inches of a very hot boiler, and guttapercha insulation would have degraded rather quickly in the heat.
