While the 34 once was a slug it now is part of a set (along with 33) that
tests certain defects within rail.  Not sure exactly what or how this is
done but I suspect that it partially has to do with weight.  The cab was a
recent addition, with the unit serving for a number of years without one.
The cab's addition was a matter of convenience since the consist can be
operated from either end now, which was not quite so easy to do prior to
the addition of the cab.  The unit was rebuilt from NS/N&W EMD SD35 1530.
