Depending upon the railroad, it was probably different somewhat for
each one. A real flag would lend itself to needing replacement
frequently no doubt, all for a host of reasons; vandalism and weather
quickly come to mind. On Southern I have specifically read that it was
a wooden board, mounted on a pole and painted with some sort of
colors, to be raised at the flag station so that it could be seen some
distance away. I don't know the specifics of N&W, B&O, Pennsy or
others but have a hunch they probably weren't too different but am
speaking off the cuff on this one and not from the specific book of
rules.
In many ways it might seem to be like a switch stand with the target
about 12 feet up the pole.

I do a lot of traveling in Orange and Culpeper Counties and have found some
wonderful railroad type sites including the restored Orange, VA station and
an old general store in Winston, VA right off the tracks which I assume are
Norfolk Southern tracks (Norfolk & Western). Is there some source that
is available to obtain more information about Winston, VA and any other
significant buildings, track, or stations in this area? I must not be looking
in the right places as I am pretty much coming up with blanks. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Having been raised in Wytheville, I am glad
to see that the fundraising for the Rural Retreat station seems to be
going well. Have a great weekend.
