I  was always told that "the summit" just west of town was the highest 
point on  the N&W, about 2750 ft. 

Until the Abingdon Branch was abandoned in  the 70's, White Top was the 
highest point on the N&W
at 3,523 feet,  although some data indicates it was 3,577 feet.  It 
outranked Balsam, NC  on
Southern's Murphy Branch.              Harry Bundy
