Amtrak power, cars, and technical people working in cooperation with
Norfolk Southern made the excursions from Roanoke on the 10th and 11th
possible. I was just a passenger, but I was favorably impressed.

I have to agree with Mike. Amtrak has done very well with what they
have to work with. They are constantly looking over their shoulder with
the government always trying to cut their funding. The Amtrak subsidies
are only a token of the budget for airports and highways. The regional
train out of Lynchburg is doing way better than predicted. And, Lois,
if you come up withe funds and someone to rebuild the 611, Norfolk
Southern will run it.
Now, let's stop badmouthing Amtrak and give them our support.
Thanks,

Well, disgrace is a pretty strong word. Amtrak isn't what passenger
rail service was during the 1950's, but few things are. Personally,
if I mail voice my opinion, Amtrak has done a lot with hand they were
dealt, and my wife and I have had many enjoyable trips by Amtrak and
have been pleasantly surprised by most of the staff & passengers we
interacted with.

If I may voice my opinion, I'd rather it be a
railroad-operated passenger train. Amtrak is a disgrace. Maybe this
would provide a reason to consider getting 611 out of the
museum, like my group, the Friends of the 611, are trying to do.

Mayor Bowers: Passenger rail service coming to Roanoke by 2018
Roanoke’s long-wished-for access to passenger rail is on the way,
according to Roanoke Mayor David Bowers. But don't pack your bags just
yet.
“You’ll be waiting at the station until 2018,” Bowers added during
a meeting this morning where the Roanoke City Council laid out its
legislative agenda to the local General Assembly delegation.
Bowers said he was told by staff from the Virginia Department of
Rail and Transportation at a recent conference in Williamsburg that
Roanoke is next on the list to get passenger rail service via
Amtrak, now that service between Norfolk and Richmond is about to
begin.
But the timeline was a disappointment because it's actually three
or four years farther out than past estimates. And there’s still no
promise of a way to pay for it, the mayor said.

No Amtrak for 2014 Roanoke convention but maybe the 2019 convention?
