On December 7, 1941, Cpl. Irving Nile Akers, USMC was on duty as a Marine 
Embassy Guard and radio telegrapher in Peking, China, when he and his 202 fellow 
Marines were ordered to surrender to the superior Japanese force occupying North 
China.  He spent the duration of the war as a POW, doing hard labor in China and 
later in Japan.  About one third of the POWs did not make it, but he did and was 
very happy to come home.  The photo attached is the telegram he sent his father, 
J. L. Akers, N&W agent in Rural Retreat, telling him he was coming from 
Washington on Train 41 and to meet him in Roanoke.
