N&W Tanks: Use of Anti-Corrosives Inside the Cisterns

Question... Were the cisterns of N&W tenders painted on the inside with any variety of anti-corrosive compound, e.g. red lead mixed with linseed or some other oil ?
If so, applying it inside a tank must have been one awful job after the introduction of spray painting.
Which raises another question... When did the N&W shops begin using compressed air spray painting?
