That is a very interesting discovery Roger.  The  territory within the VGN 
section gang boundaries was not always consistent  although out on the 
mainline, they were usually eight miles. And like the  mileposts, their numbering 
started at the east end.  The black band at the  top was added by N&W after 
the merger.  A couple more can be seen  in  Victoria's  Virginian Railroad 
History Park.
