Interesting discussion!<br/>Water treatment also helped minimize "foaming" of water in the boiler, which reduced steaming efficiency, and in extreme cases could even draw excess moisture into the cylinders, known as "priming" if memory serves.<br/><br/>In the excursion era, water treatment can be tricky, given each tender-full may come from a vastly different, untreated water source and necessitate a different chemical brew to treat.<br/><br/>Some engines also had a "Foam-meter" in the cab to alert crews to the condition.
