After Dinner Tour of High Bridge

99th Anniversary of the Steel Viaduct

High Bridge Trail State Park invites the public to attend an after dinner
tour of High Bridge in celebration of the 99th anniversary of the steel
bridge. It was on June 22, 1914 that the N&W Railway diverted traffic
from the old bridge supported on 20 brick piers to a newly completed steel
viaduct.

On Saturday, June 22nd, the Park's Education Specialist, Bob Flippen, will
lead a walk across High Bridge while occasionally stopping to discuss the
bridge construction process and how it differed from the original bridge
constructed in the early 1850s. Visitors are encouraged to arrive at the
River Road parking lot by 7:00 p.m. and then proceed about a mile to High
Bridge where the tour will start at 7:30 p.m. Bring drinking water, your
camera and binoculars to enjoy spectacular views of the countryside. This
section of the trail will remain open until 10:30 p.m. for firefly viewing
at High Bridge. The event is free, but a parking fee applies at the River
Road parking lot.

The Park also recommends visiting the High Bridge exhibit at Virginia's
Heartland Regional Visitor Center located at 121 East Third Street, only
one block off of Main Street in downtown Farmville. The exhibit features
images of the 1914 High Bridge construction. The Visitor Center is open
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 360 days a year.
