rock slide detectors

Were the rock slide detectors tied into the signal system?  In other words, if a rock slide detector in a block were activated, would this cause the signals for that block to go to stop (or any other aspect for that matter)?

  Yes indeed.  And one section foreman found slide fences a real benefit.  Seems his gang was
  working west of Shawsville when he heard a train approaching.  The gang's motor car still
  occupied the main track, so by springing onto the fence, he was able to stop the train before
  it demolished the motor car . . . . . . uh, so the story goes.     Harry Bundy
