Gentlemen:
This a great discussion and when Jim added into the mix about the 2-8-2
wheel arrangement, I felt it was time to toss my hat into this ring.
Norfolk Southern Rwy. had Alco design a 2-10-0 for freight service, but the
road eventually bought what was USA's lightest 2-8-4 from Baldwin. The
engine design took into account the 60# main line rail and the capacity of
the
five-piling trestle bents across the Albemarle Sound. The 2-8-4s were
known
in NS operations as, um, a born out of wedlock Mikado.
Inicentally, those NC&StL 4-8-4s were Dixies.
