scrapped 4-8-2 at Roanoke 1958

The attached photo by R.E.Field shows a 4-8-2 at Roanoke ready to be towed
away for scrap in Sept. 1958. What interests me about this photo is the fact
that not only has the number been removed from the front of the loco but the
number on the cabside and N&W on the tender have been painted out. Why was
this done? Why the need for anonymity? Any ideas on the loco's identity?
