On the Illinois Central, 2-10-2's were called "Centrals" in company
issued literature but in actual practice, I head them called 2700's
and 2800's, just as their Mountains which came in several
versions,were called 2300's, 2400's, 2500's and 2600's. Of those, the
2500's were freight locos and the others seem to have been dual
service engines. The 2300 and 2400 engines were mostly for passenger
service but also handled priority freights such as the famous banana
trains from New Orleans to Chicago.
