I believe Baldwin at one time called the triplex a "tractor Mallet". The Canadian Pacific called their 2-10-4's "Selkirks".

Whither the Triplex? It was a 2-8-8-8-4 on the Virginian (sole engine, XA class, returned to Baldwin to become a 2-8-8-0 and a 2-8-2). The Erie had a little more success, their Triplex engines were 2-8-8-8-2 Mallets.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triplex_(locomotive) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-8-8-8-4
