My father and his friend Don Jameson from Batavia, Ohio chased some of
the October 1959 run with 611.
They said the trip was somewhat last minute and they had not heard
about it in time to purchase tickets(no internet then).
So they drove over that way, and my dad has a shot from an overpass
over the yard of the train working into the yard
and station, plus some scenes at Bluefield and the departure. Now
more recently I was given some footage from Mr. Jamesons
son that included more footage of this trip. My dad was driving so
his friend Don shot some from the car. Its not real great but
its additional stuff to watch.
My father, Warren Scholl got to ride the cab of a J in the late
50's from Batavia to Portsmouth on either the Arrow or the Cavalier.
I don't know the number. However, he does have a few stills, and a
few years back Gary Rolih of Cincinnati did some prints from
our negatives. One shot has 611 in regular service stopped at
Batavia, and another almost identical is of a K2a.
Years back we did a video called Norfolk and Western Steam
Freights, that my father shot. On the end we advertised a promo
for a Passenger version, which we never got around to doing. Someday
I still hope to do this project, although I may get the footage
redone as the early transfer we did was not as good as what we can do
today.
As for the 611 excursions, we have the first run from Birmingham
to Roanoke, including the crew pulling the masking tape off the aux
tender in the shop the day before and gleaming new out of the box 611
in steam. I recently transferred all of my early 611 footage on
sound movies, and plan on a production in 2014. This will have
footage from 1982 and 1983.
