Larry,

I am not familiar with the Kenova Belt Line unless it was the old Twelve Pole Line before it was cut. If it was the Twelve Pole Line, that was its proper name even if it was called something else by some.

I am not for change for the sake of change; only if something better results. I, too, had bosses who wanted to change just to show they were "dynamic". For some it was chaos and the only thing needed was dynamic brakes.

Now how do you explain the Kenova Belt Line never went around anything ! But has
always been called a belt line. See what Ed got started here. I can see him laughing
like Santa Clause this very minute. I personally don't like change either. But my employer
is always telling me change is good.

Changing terminology adds confusion when proper terms are ignored. Here in Radford, the old Radford Branch is now referred to as the "belt line". On the N&W a belt line orignially was a through line around an congested or easier grade area while leaving an old line in service. Best examples are the Lynchburg, Farmville, and Petersburg belt lines.

Every time I hear the term belt line in Radford, I think what is it going around being a spur to a plant less than two miles from the Bristol line.

Change is not always good.

Anybody know how many motors an SD70Mac has? I mean ALL of them, counting cab heaters, etc.

Bob Pilcher was fond of saying that a Y-6 had eighteen or nineteen engines . . .

Gary

People say change is good. I like the term motors better then units. I often here the pocky dispatcher
say "Tie your horses up and lock the doors" Of course that works on NS I don,t know how that would workout
on CSX

Just to confuse things more, theoretically, the diesel motor on the diesel-electric locomotive is properly called the ‘prime mover’ as it supplies mechanical work to the generator/alternator , then the electricity to the electrical transmission components and drive motors on the locomotive.

"The times they are 'a changin'".

Well, actually, already changed. I heard them called motors for years on the yard. But Jimmy is right, in that they were most commonly referred to as units. Then I worked with one conductor who almost always called them .....what else?....."Diesels".

You are right Richard. Back when I was in freight, many engineers, one in particular named Charlie Linkous always referred to the consist as motors.

“Motors?” MOTORS?

Where I come from, electrics were called motors. Diesels were not.

A couple of interesting motors arrived at Bristol today. #3522 was 2nd on 819; 8734 led 22A (with a much cleaner, newer 1027 following).
