Auville Coaling Tower

Bud and Gordon,

Louise Newton states on page 29 and 34 of The Arrow Vol.28 No.3 that the new
Auville Coaling Tower was "completed in 1956" and "would probably be the
last such facility built in the United States". I'm glad it's still standing
as a testimony to the N&W's faith in steam. And to think that the N&W was
building a new coaling tower even as diesels were beginning to operate on
the Pocahontas Division.

Your photo was taken from the tank, just as Gary Price suggested.? The old
depot house track is still there, and now known as the Virginia House switch
that was used by the old furniture plant.? The west switch for the house
track was taken out many years ago, and now only the east switch remains.
The photo was taken from the tank looking west toward Marion.? The road
crossing visible is now known as Virginia Highlands Avenue.

Your date for the Iaeger coaling station is probably about right because the
5/19/53 Data Book II lists Iaeger as having two Norfolk Type coal hoists
with 85 cu. ft. buckets serving two tracks.

At the Archives session this week, I'll check the drawing revision log book
for the Data Book drawings to see if their revision details pin this date
down closer.

I visited Auville Yard at Iaeger about a month and half ago but could not
find a date on the coaling station when it was built. I believe it was
about 1955 and was probably the last one built. The 1956 Annual Report lists
Auville/Iaeger yards having completed improvements in 1956 but does not
elaborate on what the changes/improvements were.

It didn't occur to me that the Auville coaling station was listed as
Iaeger, but the latter is given as Ogle 200 tons.

I got to looking at these a bit more. Are you sure about Vicker
being 250 tons and Farm being 200 tons? Those structures are much smaller
than Bluefield and Prichard.
