"Get a copy of "Norfolk and Western Coal  Cars From 1881 to 1998" by Andrew 
Dow, TLC Publishing, 1998.  It appears  to be out of print at TLC (a check 
of their web site, http://www.greatrailroadbooks.com/, doesn't  show it), 
but there are a couple of copies currently listed on eBay in the  $90-95 price 
range."

With prices like that, it appears to be time for a  reprint.
