S-1s were bought from C&O and had modified USRA (short) tenders. S-1as were built by Roanoke Shops with tenders using the frames and trucks from the USRA 12,000 gallon tenders that came to the railroad with the Y-3 2-8-8-2s in 1919. They were the long tenders and as rebuilt held 13,000 gallons of water. The S-1s kept the numbers they’d had on the C&O – 255-284. The S-1as were numbered 200-244.

I noticed that the S 0-8-0 locos had long or short tenders. Is there rhyme or reason for it...S1 had long and S1a were short for example.
I am heavily kitbashing a LifeLike 0-8-0 so would like to know which number to make it as it has the shorter tender...
Already has sound so not inclined to lengthen it...not that heavily kitbashed!
Thanks,
Mike Shockley
PS Hope to bring it to Roanoke for the convention.
