"Takin' Twenty" with the Virginian Brethren by Skip Salmon

Last night I had the pleasure of "Takin' Twenty" with five of the Brethren
and Friends of the Virginian Railway.  The "buzz" of the night was the
video that has been circulating of the two women who survived after being
run over by a train on a trestle.  Raymond East, former VGN Engineer, said
he "felt for the crew who thought the women were killed".


 The ebay report this time has two high price items:  badge with "POLICE
VIRGINIAN RY" for $202.50 and a builder's plate off VGN EL-C #141 (N&W #241
EL-C; NH #310 EF-4 and PC #310 E-33) for $1125.00.


 The winner of this week's pin is Robin Shavers of Richmond who answered a
hatchet as the first gift from Mr. Peevee.  The question this week is from
the show where Barney confronted the two truck vendors:  What animal did
Barney say the two "ran like into the wind" when he FIRST told them to

 The Jewel from the Past is from January 10, 2008:  "Discussed was the 1936
blue and white streamline Rexall train recently highlighted on the
'Junkman', Aubrey Wiley's great site.  The Brethren like the story of the
47 state tour and especially enjoyed the part about the VGN MB coal burner
taking the point on the trip from Mullens to Roanoke.  Raymond East, former
VGN Engineer, had feelings for the regular 'hogger' who must have been
'humbled' somewhat by this 'com-uppance'.


 For Show and Tell, I took my latest VGN artifact given to me by my good
friend in Lafayette, VA.  It is a metal painted sign from the Princeton
Shop.  It was discovered in the rubble and has #71 tag (probably also made
in the Shop).  These signs were positioned throughout the shop where oxygen
and gas were piped in for the welding and burning.  This will either be
displayed in the Virginian Station or used as a trade piece for other VGN
items.  I have posted a photo of this sign on "Skip's photos".


 Also taken last night was what I think the very best Trains magazine ever
published, the September 2014 one. Two photos of the Virginian heritage
unit #1069 stand out.  Cover shot from Shawsville, VA is probably the most
prominent, but the jewel is the three pages 23, 24 AND 25 showing NS 756
coal train at the famous Kumis siding site.  Both are by Sam Phillips.  As
Saltwater Salmon said earlier, if you don't get Trains in the mail, go NOW
and get one at the magazine store!  Also in this issue on page 14 is a
great article about NS rebuilding C40-8 GEs at the Roanoke Locomotive Shop
using an EMD SD60E cab.  The new hybrid diesel electric becomes a C40-8.5W.


 Then there's this:  A woman runs a red light and crashes into a man's car.
 Both of their cars are demolished, but amazingly, neither of them is hurt.
 After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says;"Wow, just look at our
cars! There's nothing left, but we are unhurt.  This must be a sign from
God that we should meet and be friends and live in peace for the rest of
our days".  The man replies, "I agree with you completely.  This must be a
sign from god!"  The woman continues, "And look at this, here's another
miracle.  My car is completely demolished, but my bottle of wine didn't
break.  Surely God wants us to drink this wine and celebrate our good
fortune."  She then hands the bottle to the man.  He nods his head in
agreement, opens it, drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the
woman.  She takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap back on, and hands
it back to the man.  The mans asks, "Aren't you having any?"  The woman
replies, "Nah, I think I'll just wait for the police."
