This is fascinating stuff. Somewhere in all my collecting of all things N&W (from eBay and train shows and......) I obtained a copy of the study performed in the 60's by the N&W to support the first major effort in building the new yard facilities at Bellevue. I find studying traffic flow/capacity/dwell times/train scheduling/crew and motive power utilization and such to be most interesting. In a competitive market a successful business must meet its customers needs by providing the best service value while at the same time increasing shareholder's wealth. NS management seems to overall do very well at this. My somewhat moderate investment in NS stock certainly has done well over the last 20 years.
