> To Ron Cochran. The signal in question at Rawl was referred to as switching lights locally. There were several of these located thru out Williamson Yard. Before the use of radio communication these switching lights were used once the engineer was out of sight of hand signals by the ground crew on long pulls for switching. A crew member would operate the indication of the lights from a rotating switch mounted inside a metal call box mounted on a telephone pole next to the switching. The lights would indicate the direction the engine was to move. A yellow indication was to pull ahead. A stationary red was to stop. A flashing red was to back up. To "kick" cars alternating quick movement between between yellow and red was used. To slow down or "steady" to make a coupling the lights would be turn off until coupling was made then a red stop indication was displayed. This was old time railroading we used until handheld radio's began to be issued to individual crew members in the early 80's on Williamson yard.
