My first gut reaction is that this is downtown Roanoke. The bridge could be
the old Williamson Road bridge just east of the old passenger station. The
peak of the building sticking out over the bridge could be the old passenger
station. The track coming toward the photographer could be the Pum'kin
Vine. The passenger car could be in the coach yard. There appears to
be a semaphore behind (and viewed above) the passenger car. The semaphore
could be on the Valley line (or for the shops). The full load of coal
suggests that 561 was just serviced - so the picture was likely taken at
one of the major terminals/yards/facilities.
Photo NW05850 in the NWHS archives (Doc Number 372-A) shows a view looking
east with the old Williamson Road bridge. It looks like it could explain
the view if the photographer was on Norfolk Ave just east of the Williamson
Road bridge.
In old track charts, etc. from the 10's, 20's or 30's (era of the E2a's) was
the dwarf signal at the northern end of the Pumkin Vine numbered 20?
Just having fun, speculating on a rainy night....
