End of copper/zinc battery jars

As a kid hanging out at the Rural Retreat Depot I remember battery jars
using crows' feet of copper and zinc to make power. Where can I learn more
about this, such as how much power was generated, where did it go/what was
it used for. Also, when were they taken out of service?  Thanks in advance.
