Sawdust was used with icing operations for refrigerated box car service.
Maybe the shavings went there?

Wouldn't that be a box containing the phone equipment?

Recently someone asked me about cars (of another road) which were designated
"Shaving(s) Cars" in the Equipment Register.
This made me think about the Shaffers Crossing planing mill. The planing
mill had a large metal retaining tank, perhaps 60 feet in the air, into
which I think the wood shavings from the planing work may have been blown.
It was located on the south side of the planing mill, adjacent to the Ice
House.
Does anyone know how disposition was made of the shavings? Were they burned
on-site for steam generation, sold, or disposed of as trash?? Unfortunately,
the planing mill was closed shortly before I hired, and I never took time to
explore it or ask questions.
Photo attached, with red arrow pointing to this tank.? Notice that the
tender of Engine 2112 sports an antenna for what appears to be inductive
train phone equipment.

I'm not sure the EPA Is the prime reason for the decline in coal use. The
increased availability of cheap natural gas is the reason many utilities
have stopped burning coal. And I'm not sure the decline in coal use is the
prime reason for downgrading the P-D district. Apparently NS figures it is
cheaper to route traffic to Wharncliffe than to maintain traffic on the P-D
district.

the Pokey main at Wharncliffe. That means nearly 50 miles of the old VGN
mainline will fall silent. Whether this is temporary or permanent, I do not

Hello,
I was searching railpictures.net and found this one photo of Class J 605
arriving in Roanoke from the west and in the caption it said it was leading
"The Tennessean". The first seven visible cars in the picture are all N&W
cars, 5 of which are head end cars. This leads me to believe it is the
"Pocahontas". Can I get some clarification on this please?
Very Respectfully,
Joseph Congemi

What was used for the interior walls on wooden cabooses (CF in particular)?
Was is board and batten, bead board, the same as used for the exterior
sheathing or something else entirely? How about the floors and ceilings?
Were they painted that light mint green color that was used for steam
locomotive cab interiors?

It has been proven this administration, thus the epa, hates anything
traditionally American. ?We have to preserve our legacies...thus our great
historical group. ?I can only hope the next generation cares about it half
as much as we do!
