1218 Detail

Mr. Greer -

This occurred on the Bristol roundhouse servicing trackage.  The 1240 came in on a passenger extra and was coupled up to the 379 (I believe, since it has the screened stack) and they are going up to the top end to come down the servicing track coupled together.  

Bristol saw all sorts of possibilities for odd things coupled together.  Fans would see a J coupled up to a pair of Southern Diesels going under the Mary Street Bridge and break into all sorts of ecstatic pronouncements about what was happening, but it was only hostlers taking power to or from the roundhouse to the station.  If it was handy to take a diesel set to the station coupled to a J going on #46, for instance, they’d take both at once.  But fans would look at the photo and swear that the J went down to Bluff City or somewhere to drag a Southern train into town.  Not so.

Often, #45’s inbound J would go to the roundhouse coupled to the M arriving on the Abingdon Branch train.  Late one night, a friend and I rode #17’s inbound J to the roundhouse coupled to a Southern Geep off the yard.  Just one of many instances that made sure I would be no good for anything other than railroading the rest of my life – so far . . .

I thought that could only happen on my model layout.
